Fishing Stories

Fish

Starting at 4.30am all the lakes look stunning as the sun starts to rise over the trees behind the stream (Which feeds all four lakes) and the morning mist clings to the surface of the water. Carp can be heard slurping in the margins around the lake and the island.
From a specimen carpers point of view, rig wise extreme simplicity is required for example the short (4-5 inch) hooklinks and 2.5-3.0 oz semi fixed lead systems that i normally use seemed to make the carp shy away, so a change to long florocarbon (12 - 16 inch) hooklinks and running leads with a bead did the trick and was enough to fool a fair few carp. With that said during the time I spent there, the weather was so clear and hot that the carp were reluctant to feed off the bottom so surface fishing was the only option, this presented one problem, the fish at Trencreek are so clued up that any line laying on the surface spooked them off. So I took the advice off a local angler and a page out of the pole anglers book (I used to be a pole angler but got fed up with the bad back). There was also a pole angler on site at the same time who had great success with this method (100lb hual in half a day), which was simplicity itself - a hook tied to the line and thats it! Band a floating dog biscuit or sidehook a false dog biscuit and with only a few inches to a few feet of line (respective of pole or running line), just tap the bait on the surface and wait for those big lips to come up and slurp down the bait and your in. This is one of the best and most FRUSTRATING methods I have ever used because when a carp takes your bait and you strike theres an almighty splash as the fish rolls and takes a dive for all its worth. It is not a method for the faint of heart.
This is just the point of view of a carper who sits behind his alarms tying rigs and filling PVA bags, But other methods are equally good such as waggler float fishing or a patternostered bomb rig on a light tip rod for the huge Roach and Rudd that also reside in the lakes (NEVER FORGET THE MARGINS).

BAIT
Bait bans are in place at Trencreek Farm and can be seen on their web site, but to be honest after trying baits that I've used to great effect on other carp waters they are not required. As with the methods and rigs keep the bait simple cheese, bread, sweetcorn, strawberries and probably the best of all Lunchenmeat (plain and straight out the tin). I also used pellets in pva bags (carp pellets only, trouties are banned due to their high oil content). Of course pedigrie chum mixer for the floater fishing its very cheap and very effective. One bag should be enough for a weeks fishing... trust me you DO NOT need a lot of bait most of the fish I caught off the top was with the hook bait only and no freebies, its also good for the water to not put too much bait in. Disintergrating groundbait works but seems to attract the smaller fish (great if your targeting them) - again don't use to much. More bait does not equait to more and bigger fish they are not used to it.
Some bait can be bought in the on-site shop along with a few rig bits but by far the best place to buy coarse fishing bait if you're not taking it with you is the tackle shop 30 minuites away in Newquay.

There are also some nice bream in the lakes and some quite impressive eels too 6.5 lbs. This is a great place for all range of anglers from total beginers to the very experienced, fun for all the family including the rest of the farm, GREAT POOL, and genuinely good hearted people and staff.

I will be retuning to trencreek for many years to come.

Jamie Carlin fishing at Trencreek Farm Summer 2007

"We have been visiting Trencreek Farm every year for the last 5 years for 4 days at a time in our Tourer, the park is excellent value for money. We spend ALL day fishing. I caught 12 fish yesterday, my best so far is an 8Ib Common Carp. Eddies is a 10.5Ib Mirror Carp"
Mrs. Ann Mabey from Mullion (15/06/2006).

"I fish for Carp and use 'Freebies' - dog biscuits (Chum Mixer) from my local market to create activity in the water. The smaller fish start competing. I then use floating bate (imitation dog biscuits) and hope that the bigger Carp take it from the surface. I've had an 11Ib Common Carp this morning using this technique. It was about 2 inches from the side of the lake. When fishing from the bottom I use Luncheon meat"
Jamie Carlin from Nottingham (15/06/2006).

"Bread is faster than cheese. I throw in bread to create activity in the water, although not too big a splash. Evening fishing is good at Trencreek"
George Coleman from Mansfield (02/02/2006).

"This is my first time at Trencreek and it won't be my last...Excellently priced and fantastic wildlife. I have been using a Ledger on the bottom, on a swing tip during my stay and fishing in the middle of the lake using a float rod"
Darrell Roebuck from Sheffield (15/06/2006).

Do you have any exciting Trencreek Farm lake fishing stories you’d like to add, if so, add them to our Fishing Diary.

Maybe you caught a 20lb carp, or you had a record number of catches that day. Or maybe you simply met a good friend.

Let others know how good your fishing experience was at Trencreek Farm Country Holiday Park.
